Install the latest software and app updates

Quickly installing security updates will help keep hackers away from your accounts and devices.
As soon as updates become available, you should install them on your device’s software and apps. Updates frequently include enhancements and new features in addition to protection against viruses and other types of malware.
Do not disregard a notification to update your device or apps. One of the most crucial (and quickest) things you can do to protect yourself online is to apply these updates.
Additionally, if your device has the option, you should enable “automatic updates” in the settings. This will mean you do not have to remember to apply updates.

Staying current with "smart" devices
Visit the manufacturer’s official website and look for information about updating your device in the support section for guidance on how to keep smart devices (like smart speakers, fitness trackers, and security cameras) up to date.

When your device no longer receives updates
Updates for older devices are eventually discontinued by manufacturers. If you continue to use a device that’s no longer supported:
it won’t receive updates that contain new features and performance improvements
- it won’t receive the security updates from the manufacturer (and without these, your phone is less secure)
Avoid purchasing and using phones that are no longer supported, but you do not have to buy the newest (or priciest) model to be safe. To see if the manufacturer is still providing updates for a particular model, you can look it up online. Here are the details for iPhone, Chrome, and Pixel/Nexus devices.
If you own a different kind of Android device, like one made by Samsung or Huawei, you will need to check with the manufacturer.
